The disastrous events of the Zoot Suit Riots were rumored to be the most devastating incident that had ever occurred in Los Angeles. L.A. was a racist environment for the Hispanic population in the 1940’s, with rising tensions between Anglo Americans and Hispanic youth being common. The week of the Zoot Suit Riots involved American servicemen brutally beating minorities, targeting people wearing zoot suits, which is an exaggerated version of the traditional business suit. The origin of the riots trace back to one night at Sleepy Lagoon, where a murder case victimizes a young group of Mexican-Americans as murderers, which made the city of Los Angeles view all people of Hispanic descent as gangsters and criminals. With a discriminatory trial, slanted media claims, and cases of racial profiling, it comes to question if Mexican-Americans were ever capable of feeling a sense of belonging in a white-dominated society that looked down upon their cultural heritage.
