What are the similarities and differences between the LA River and rivers around the world?
It was January 1995 when another massive flood hit Nijmegen, Netherlands. The Waal river flooded again. Thousands of people were evacuated, in fear that the dikes would collapse, and they would be drowned. Fortunately, the dikes stayed up, and it was safe for the people to return home in a few days. The flood raised awareness of flooding in the area, so people decided to take flood protection protocols. Some things this plan proposed were to relocate the dike three hundred and fifty meters inland, digging another channel, and making a river island in between them. A lot of people had to give up their homes if they wanted to make room for the river, but not a lot of people agreed to do this. Because of this, they weren’t able to carry out that plan. A bridge was built over the river to connect communities and to provide more opportunities.
The Klang River in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia flows from west to east and is 120 kilometers long. It drains a 1,288 square kilometer basin that produces sewage, chemicals, and trash. One goal of the River of Life project is to turn the water quality from dangerous to approach to clean enough to swim in. Three fourths of the budget was spent on improving the water quality. The project contractors built traps to capture trash, grease, and wastewater treatment plants. An 1,848 acre area in central Kuala Lumpur was torn up to build or replace miles of sewer lines to serve the plants. 1,300 households were moved to new public housing. $337 million was devoted to redeveloping the near-shore neighborhoods. |
